Iris Reticulata (1)

I have my first flowering bulb of the new year - an Iris Reticulata.

This one is a deep purple colour, though I also have some that will be a pale blue. They flower just a few days later than the purple ones.

So far there is just one flower open, but I hope some more will follow soon. I think I have about a dozen each of the purple and blue ones.

These bulbs are in the "grass" around the base of my Crab Apple tree. The flowers only last a week or so, but soon after they have finished it will be the turn of the miniature daffodils to show off. I have lots more of those and they usually make a good display.

I also spotted a few Crocuses showing colour now - although due to the scarcity of sunshine the flowers are remaining tightly closed.

  2. Early bulbs don't do well in my garden so I bought a pot with three purple iris reticulata and sat them outside where I could see them. They are over now. I wish I had some bright mini tulips too.

  3. Beautiful photos...the iris reticulata is quite elegant...with the royal purple and yellow!

  4. It's great to see spring colour emerging. The iris is striking and I'm fan of crocus. Do you leave the iris in the ground throughout the year?

  5. Hi Kelli; Yes, I leave the irises in the ground all year. Digging them up would disturb the mini daffodils which come into flower just as the irises finish.

  7. I have these irises at my place too. Nothing like the first bulbs appearing. I'm glad for you but a teeny bit jealous. We're heading to the end of summer and I do love the warmer weather.

  8. Ooo I love bulbs! Most of the ones I love don't do well here, but I do have autumn crocus that pop up each year, and I find them quite delightful.

The iris you have is a lovely colour, and you have caught my interest by mentioning your crap apple tree, I still don't know what one is!

  9. Definately envious, after all the snow we now have temps -15 to -19 C for the next few days.... Thanks for sharing your blooms!

  10. Hi Mark,
Ah my favourite colour. I haven't seen any pretty colours popping up in Scotland yet, the soil is just getting a good rain pounding.

Also wanted to say I do love reading your comments on my blog. I responded to the one you left on my Mushroom Pie and I don't know if you saw the response, so I thought I'd come and bug you here :D
'I don't have Onion Marmalade. Do you? And would you like to do a swap for one of my home made chutney. I think being a chilli man, the Scotch Bonnet Apple chutney would appeal to you. Let me know via e mail'.

  11. I am planning on some mini irises for our front patch - maybe Katherine Hodgkin - have you any of those?

  12. Ali, how dare you insult my apple tree! It is a CRAB apple tree, not a crap apple tree! In all honesty it is quite a nice tree: it has lovely blossoms in April and produces lots of fruit in the late summer.(See one of my earliest posts, from 16 August 2010, called "Crab Apples")

  13. @GLA: I don't remember what my irises are I'm afraid. I just bought them because I liked the picture on the packet! :)

  14. Gorgeous colour, almost iridescent, reminds me of a peacock! Mine are nowhere near flowering.
